COMMUNITY USE OF SCHOOL FACILITIES

It shall be the policy of the Board to encourage the greatest possible use of school buildings for community-wide activities.  This is meant to include use by recognized civic, social and fraternal and religious organizations in accordance with law.  Groups wishing to use the school facilities must secure written permission from the Superintendent and abide by the rules and regulations established for such use including restrictions on alcohol, tobacco and drug use. The Superintendent, at his/her discretion, may consult with the Board of Education. Monthly reports may be made to the Board regarding community use of the school facilities.

FACILITIES PROJECTS

Landing Boiler Project Completed

The aging boilers at Landing Elementary have been replaced with two new modern and efficient cast iron steam boilers.  In addition, the boilers are equipped with new condensate pump return systems, energy-saving boiler cycling controls and lead/lag boiler controls to equalize run times of both boilers. The boilers are integrated to the building management system, which starts and stops boiler operation based upon outside air temperature automatically.  Both boilers are currently online and will provide decades of steam heating service to the Landing School.

GCHS Locker Rooms Completed

Glen Cove High School’s new boys and girls athletic locker rooms were completed last month and are fully operational for the  fall athletic season. Close to 1,200 new lockers have been installed between both athletic locker rooms and team rooms, along with new benches and showers. New bathrooms have also been installed and there  is a smart board in each team room for game planning, review and analysis.  Joined by Board of Education members, Director of Facilities Joseph Fiorino recently led the community on a tour of the new rooms.

GCHS & Robbie Wagner Team to Renovate Tennis Courts

In an ongoing effort to maintain all facilities and grounds in the Glen Cove School District, administrators recently announced that tennis courts at Glen Cove High School have been successfully resurfaced. Director of Facilities Joseph Fiorino said that the school’s seven tennis courts had been in poor shape, with six-inch wide cracks in the pavement.  Mr. Fiorino estimated that the last time the courts were upgraded was 30 years ago.

Robbie Wagner’s Tournament Training Center of Glen Cove partnered with the district to repair the tennis courts. The project commenced in 2011 and was completed this June. It included the installation of concrete bases with asphalt tops, and sand paint was used for all the courts. The project comes at no cost to the district.

“They’ve had great success in Glen Cove with the tennis program, and they wanted to give back to the community,” Mr. Fiorino said of the Robbie Wagner center.

GCHS has experienced success with its tennis program as well. The boys varsity team was crowned conference champions in spring 2012, and the girls varsity team was honored as conference champions in fall 2012.

The courts are now open to residents of Glen Cove for use.

Glen Cove High School Breaks Ground on New Locker Rooms

In a continued effort to consistently maintain and improve all schools in Glen Cove, administrators and members of the Board of Education came together to break ground on new boys and girls athletic locker rooms at Glen Cove High School. The existing locker rooms were the original rooms from when the school was built in 1962. A complete renovation is planned, including new floors, ceilings, lockers and showers, which were all redesigned with the input of the athletic committee, coaches and Director of Athletics, Health and Physical Education Denise Kiernan. Additionally, there will be a new trainers office and more open space for team meetings, with the entire design featuring school colors to capture a sense of Glen Cove Big Red school pride. Completion of the project is expected in mid-August.

The project is the final component of a May 2009 bond, which also replaced roofs on Deasy Elementary School, Gribbin Elementary School and the high school, and new boilers at Thayer House and Gribbin School. All of the bond projects will enable the buildings to operate more efficiently and save the district money by reducing energy costs over the coming years.
